HOPELINK’S END SUMMER HUNGER CAMPAIGN

Food & fund donations collected in July and August

Outreach offerings collected in July will be designated to Hopelink

Playing outside all day long. Running home for a quick peanut butter sandwich. Energy to burn until the sun goes down. That’s what it means to be a kid in the summer, right? For most of us, yes—that’s probably what we remember.

But for approximately 2,466 students (25.5%) in the Shoreline School District who qualify for healthy breakfasts and lunches at school through free and reduced-price meal programs, summer days are not so carefree. Summer vacation can mean an end to knowing for sure when they will eat again.

And as working parents struggle to pay for summer childcare, budgets get even tighter, and decisions get even tougher:  rent, food, daycare, doctor visits . . . something has to give.

This is where we can help. During the months of July and August, the Outreach Team at First Lutheran is sponsoring a Food and Fund Drive to help feed children in our community. You are invited to bring nonperishable foods into worship to bring forward during processional offering or drop them off in the lobby during the week. You can also designate your cash donation for “Hopelink” on your giving envelope. Cash donations allow Hopelink to fill in the gaps so they are able to provide people with a balanced variety of foods. Get involved with the End Summer Hunger campaign and help Shoreline kids enjoy a healthy summer so they’re ready to learn when they go back to school in the fall.

The kick off for this event will be July 8, and reuseable grocery bags with a list of most needed foods will be distributed after both services. However, donations are welcome any time after July 1.
